MCT: the real scoop.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) can be purchased as a liquid oil or a powder based formula. At Why Weight, we use it to facilitate weight loss because it can help stabilize blood sugar swings, aid with the sense of fullness (satiety), increase calorie burning (thermogenesis), and reduce fat storage. It also provides a rapid energy source which can help to stabilize glucose swings and avoid energy slumps after use. MCT is most effective for weight management when paired with our Phase 1 Nutrition Plan or or our Ketogenic Nutrition Plan.

Key Aspects of MCT and Weight Loss:

● Appetite Control: MCT can boost the release of satiety hormones (peptide YY and leptin), which help to reduce appetite making it easier to make healthy nutritional choices and be in control of your food intake.

● Energy Boost: Unlike other fats, MCTs go directly to the liver and are metabolized rapidly, which may boost metabolic rate, calorie spending, and improve immediate energy.

● Ketone Source: MCT has roughly 10% fewer calories than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) found in oils like olive oil and boost ketones.

● Dosage & Timing: Common recommendations suggest taking 1-2 tablespoons (18–24 grams) per day, often an hour before a meal, to maximize fullness, or once daily at lunch to reduce afternoon energy slumps and evening grazing.

● It is commonly added to coffee, smoothies, or salads. The oil base works well in warm beverages.

● If you do not absorb fats well from the GI tract, MCT can cause temporary side effects like vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea. It is best introduced slowly to build tolerance, and should be avoided if these side effects do occur.

● Usually tasteless, or a hint of coconut flavor at times depending on the source.
